Puppies grow fast and need the right fuel — too little slows growth, too much strains developing joints. Here's a simple framework; always follow the feeding chart on your chosen food and your vet's advice, since needs vary by breed and size.
How often to feed
- 6–12 weeks: 4 meals a day
- 3–6 months: 3 meals a day
- 6–12 months: 2 meals a day (continue twice daily for life)
How much
Portion size depends on the food's calorie density and your puppy's expected adult weight, so the bag's chart is your best guide. As a rule of thumb, feed to keep your puppy lean — you should feel the ribs easily without pressing. Large and giant breeds need a food formulated for large-breed puppies to control growth rate.
Choosing a puppy food
Look for a food labeled complete and balanced for "growth" or "all life stages" by AAFCO, matched to your dog's size. Fresh, dry and wet foods can all work — consistency and quality matter more than format (see our guide on dog food types).
Track it
Record your puppy's weight and food in a free PetsAlbum profile alongside the vaccination schedule, so you can see healthy growth over time.
